The CLP-635 is where the CLP lineup starts to re-define what to expect from a digital piano. The re-designed interface lets you browse the 36 high-quality instrument Voices with ease. Choose from two world-class concert grand pianos, the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial. New to the CLP-600 series, you'll experience the sound of the binaurally sampled Yamaha CFX through your headphones. You can enjoy the realism of Virtual Resonance Modeling, and high-quality digital effects through the on-board stereo speaker system. Play along with built-in rhythm patterns and record your performances using the built-in USB audio recorder. And with over a century of acoustic piano manufacturing heritage, it only makes sense that the best digital pianos come from Yamaha.

Our thoughts ...

Stepping up from the CLP 625, the CLP 635 has improved sound, a full LCD screen, the built in USB Audio recorder, built in drum rhythms, new lesson songs and more color choices. The audio recorder is worth the price difference alone but all of the other extras are a nice touch. Well worth the upgrade.

The Yamaha CLP 645 Clavinova

From the Yamaha website:

The CLP-645 is the mid-range Clavinova CLP, offering powerful sound and a superb Natural Wood (NWX) keyboard action. It features the sounds of the flagship Yamaha CFX concert grand and the Bösendorfer Imperial that sound pristine through its bi-amplified internal sound system. And the Clavinova Virtual Resonance Modeling emulates the more complex elements of playing these acoustic instruments. Bluetooth audio lets you stream music from your portable smart devices, wirelessly! Record your own performances and compositions using the built-in USB audio recorder to archive your musical achievements or share them with friends and family. Traditional on the outside but modern inside, this instrument is a great piano for musicians of all skill levels.

Our thoughts ...

Stepping up from the CLP 635, the CLP 645 adds the NWX wooden key keyboard, a much improved 2 way speaker system and the super convenient bluetooth audio connection. In terms of sound, the better speakers certainly help but the big improvement here is in the feel of the keys. Much more realistic feeling. While we tend to downplay the convenience of bluetooth connectivity, it is undeniably nice to have as opposed to hooking devices up with cables. Again, a very worthwhile upgrade.

The Yamaha CLP 675 Clavinova

From the Yamaha website ...

The CLP-675 represents a new era in digital piano keyboard actions. Introducing the GrandTouch Keyboard action, which features the longest key-to-fulcrum length in any digital piano available. This gives a balanced, more playable feel from the tip of each key to the very back. Combine this incredible feel with the tone of two of the finest concert grand pianos ever made - the Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial - and you have a stunning instrument that will impress the most discerning and demanding pianists. With the Linear Graded Hammers, no two keys have the same weight, just as each and every hammer inside of a grand piano has a visibly different size. From tone to touch to pedals, the CLP-675 offers an immersive concert grand experience.

Our thoughts ...

Again, the biggest upgrade in this model is to the keyboard. The Grand Touch key action is superb, by far one of the most realistic feeling keyboard among all digital pianos. The improved 3 way speaker system makes a huge difference in the sound .. and .. the 88 individually weighted keys adds to its famously good feel. While any level player could appreciate and enjoy these features, it is aimed at a higher level player who is more demanding when it comes to the feel of the instrument.

From the Yamaha website:

As the flagship model in the series, the CLP-685 boasts a GrandTouch Keyboard action that features the individual key counter weights found in a grand piano for unrivaled realism in the resistance and return of each key. CFX and Bösendorfer samples absolutely sing through the powerful 300W sound system with Spruce Cone speakers. Spruce wood is used in the sound boards of Yamaha acoustic pianos because of its superior tone quality, and that same wood is used in the CLP-685 speaker cones. You will lose yourself in the sound of the binaurally-sampled CFX which is a totally immersive headphone experience. Selecting Voices and adjusting settings is easy using the intuitive user LCD interface.

Our thoughs ...

The counter weighted Grand Touch keyboard is the absolute best you can do in a digital piano for realistic feel. The boutique level speaker system is as good as it gets and the folding key cover is a brilliant touch. This instrument is hard to discern from the real thing, even up close. If you want the best looking and definitely the best sounding and feeling digital piano in the world, this is it. This instrument is fantastic.

The Yamaha CSP Series Clavinova

This all new series of digital pianos from Yamaha ushers in a new era of connectivity between today's tablet computing devices and the digital piano. Essentially, Yamaha has taken all of the advanced features out of the piano and put them into an app that runs on your tablet. Then by connecting them together, you get a highly powerful music making device combined with a beautiful sounding/feeling digital piano. Much more simple to operate and far more powerful then the multi-function digital pianos of yesterday. The best of everything!

What can these pianos do?

Firstly, they have great feeling keyboards and fantastic sounds, the piano sounds in particular. When paired up with your tablet, they can take a song from your music library and create a chord chart and lead sheet for you to read. Then they have advanced guide lights above the keys to help you know which notes to play. Add to that, they have an advanced built in accompaniment section that will generate a backing band that will follow your playing. With a 16 track recorder you can create full orchestrations and even record a live vocal track using its built in USB audio recording. Recordings can even be stored and shared via your tablet just like sharing a picture. If you want a great digital piano plus some very advanced learning, composing and recording functions all packed into a modern, easy to use app then the CSP series is for you.

The Yamaha CSP 170 Matte Black

The Yamaha CSP 170 Matte Black

Our thoughts ... Both the CSP 150 and the CSP 170 share most of the exact same features and specs. The only specs that differ according to Yamaha is the keyboard and the sound system. The 150 has the GH3X keyboard and the 170 has the NWX keyboard. In terms of playing experience, while the GH3X keyboard is best in its class (price range) and very good indeed, the NWX keyboard is significantly better feeling in our opinion. The larger and better speaker system of the 170 makes a big difference in sound when playing out loud and at medium to higher volumes. As well, when using multiple sounds beyond just the piano sound, the extra "umph" of the better speakers will make a big difference in sound quality. Bottom line, this series of instruments is amazing in terms of its capabilities. Both models are almost identical in this respect so if you are a bit more budget minded then the 150 will be your choice. That said, if you don't mind the extra expense of the 170, it is very much worth it in terms of playing experience and overall sound quality.
